ODM-KScandinavia, A briefcase Tribal Party in Stockholm.

By: Muthoni Kabara.

During the past week we have been entertained and also informed through different media about the wrangles in ODM-KS. We are now aware of the machinations behind the party formation, how dissenting voices in the Party have been frustrated and how raw muscle is being used to reshuffle such people. All these are not new in the shaky environment of political and welfare organizations in Stockholm.

Ms. Sofia Njoroge’s narrative on Jamii is a scathing attack on Okoth Osewe (new Secretary) and Martin Ngatia, the ODM-KS vice chairman. All these articles only raise more eyebrows and questions on the running of such an outfit. A close scrutiny will tell you that KSB (a private blog) is still being used for spreading crucial information concerning ODM-KS. The reason given is that the ODM-KS website is under construction. Munala of Jamii has written that the passwords for both the website and email address have been hijacked by an inner core of the executive committee, a fact denied by Osewe on KSB. Both Sofia (Treasurer) and Munala (Secretary) have been ‘demoted’ to ordinary committee members, respectively, etc.

A very perturbing observation is the tribal profile of the ODM-KS committee. Here is the composition:

CHAIRPERSON: MRS HELLEN OPWAPO
VICE CHAIRPERSON: MR. MARTIN NGATIA
SECRETARY: MR. OKOTH OSEWE
VICE SECRETARY: MR. ODHIAMBO OPEE JR
TREASURER: MRS GRACE NYAMBURA
VICETREASURER: VACANT
ORGANIZING SECRETARY: CHARLES OTIENO OWIYO
ORDINARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
– Mr. NJENGA MUIRANI
– Mr. WAWERU NDERU
– Mr. DANCAN MUNALA
– Ms. SOFIA NJOROGE

Is it by coincidence that the committee is composed of two of Kenya’s big tribes namely, the Luos and Kikuyus? From Jamii’s report, the rowdy youth “hired” by Ngatia to heckle their so-called illegal meeting (according to KSB), were all Kikuyus. Isn’t it also worrisome that the newly incorporated ordinary committee members are Kikuyus? Munala, a Luhya by tribe, is the only odd man out tribally. The cantankerous ODM-KS chairlady, Mrs. Opwapo, is in the Party because of her blood relations with the ODM-K luminary, Raila Odinga. Ironically, she heads an outfit whose Constitution and 12-point programme are an outright challenge to Raila Odinga’s Party.

One of the main objectives of ODM-KS is to eradicate tribalism. Does the composition of the committee reflect this? The tribal angle is bad image for a party that aspires to bring change in Kenya. Instead of jostling for power, the ODM-KS committee should be busy selling the Party objectives and recruiting KENYANS, not affiliated tribes. They should be more occupied with analyzing the current socio-economic situation in Kenya, by laying down better strategies than those presented by President Kibaki’s regime.

ODM-KS should not just poke holes in the Kenyan government, but also provide better and workable solutions. Kibaki has now declared tuition-free secondary education from 2008. This means that the free primary school programme will have a continuation to the secondary phase. The Kenyan Opposition might soon run out of criticisms because Kenyans are gradually seeing improvements in the infrastructure and other sectors. The power of incumbency should not be underrated, as recently said by Raila Odinga after observing the Nigerian presidential elections.

If ODM-KS claims to be independent from ODM-K, why did they “nominate” Raila Odinga as their preferred presidential candidate? Munala informed the Jamii readers that the so-called nomination was pure fraud. I can already predict who will be elected as officials during the May 19 2007 ODM-KS members’ meeting. ODM-KS is just a briefcase tribal party, a one man show, full of cronies with personal agenda, which Kenyans should give a wide berth.
